History: Steven Universe Wiki
Personality:
Lapis Lazuli is an enigma. Trapped for unnumbered years within a mirror, only able to watch what was going on around her, Lapis is finally freed by Steven Universe, her first friend in a very, very long time. Because of her years of isolation and imprisonment, Lapis is fearful, wary, and distrustful, having difficulty believing in herself or others. When she is freed from the mirror, all Lapis wants to do is return to the Gem Homeworld. She doesn’t want to get tied up in the politics or war or conflict of any kind. All she wants to do is escape.
Evidently, freedom is incredibly important to Lapis. After spending so much time locked away in the mirror, in the possession of the Crystal Gems who apparently didn’t even know she was in there, it’s unsurprising that Lapis wants to get as far away from them as possible when she is free. She doesn’t trust them, because they didn’t even try to find out who the gem in the mirror was. This has made Lapis generally wary and distrustful of those around her, and she’s quick to push other away. When Steven attempts to reason with her after she tries to use the ocean to reach the Homeworld, she initially wants him to go away and leave her alone. Yet when Steven is able to heal her cracked gem, Lapis quickly comes to thank him. Though she immediately flees for home after he does this, it demonstrates that Lapis is not beyond receiving help or friendship from others. She has a very difficult time doing so, because she feels betrayed by the years she spent in isolation. In turn, however, that isolation seems to have had another effect, making her eager to have friendship in her life again despite all her fears that go along with it.
And Lapis is afraid. She’s afraid of what she stands to lose, of what will happen if she’s taken prisoner again. After returning to the Homeworld, Lapis is dragged unwillingly into Peridot’s mission to Earth as an informant. She does so because she’s too afraid to fight back, believing that resisting Yellow Diamond would only make things worse in the long run. She tells Steven this very thing when they’re both prisoners on Peridot’s ship, reasoning that there’s no way that they can stop what’s going to happen, so why even try?
Yet in spite of her fears and distrust, Lapis is not weak. Aside from her considerable hyrdrokinetic abilities, Lapis has a strong heart. Her will has been beat down from her years in captivity and again when she’s pulled into Peridot’s efforts, but when Lapis has to make the choice between betraying Steven or saving him, she chooses the latter. She has the opportunity to not fight back, to go along with Jasper and fuse with her to destroy the Crystal Gems. And after all the years they’d kept her in that mirror, why shouldn’t she? She doesn’t believe she owes the Crystal Gems anything, but she does to Steven. He was the one who freed her from the mirror, and he was the one who kept being her friend despite her betrayal. Because of Steven’s actions towards her, Lapis finds the courage to fuse with Jasper into Malachite and then imprison her beneath the waves of the ocean. She willingly imprisons herself with someone she hates to save her friend. She gives up her chances of seeing her Homeworld again to return the kindness Steven had shown her. Essentially, she gives up everything she can control for him, which for a character who has spent the vast majority of her life being controlled by someone or something else, that reveals a remarkably strong will that only needed to be reminded that it could make a choice.
Lapis wants to believe in herself, and she wants to believe that things can get better for her. It’s just that after everything she’s gone through, it’s very difficult. Still, in the brief moments that she seems happy - communicating with Steven through the mirror, and after he heals her gem - she seems purely elated, like a burden has lifted from her. Even if most of the time she doesn’t think such happiness is made for her, when she has those moments, she seems to truly enjoy them. However, the ultimate expression of Lapis’s friendship doesn’t come in smiles, but in dedication. She keeps Jasper trapped underneath the waves in their fusion form so she can’t try to hurt Steven or the other Crystal Gems. It’s an incredibly difficult task, and when Steven encounters Lapis in his dreams, she is struggling to keep her control over Jasper. When Steven tries to help her, she exclaims that she wants him to let her do this for him, as a sign of her friendship. She wants nothing more than to keep Steven safe, and this is the way she has chosen to do it, and she will keep fighting back and struggling for his sake, not her own.
Abilities: As a Gem, Lapis has a few powerful canon abilities, including shapeshifting, superhuman strength, regeneration, and most notably, her hydrokinesis. Lapis has a godlike control over the element of water, able to summon up the entire ocean at will and raise it like a pillar into space. She can also use her abilities to form wings made of water after Steven heals her gem, allowing her to fly. She can also construct strong beings out of water, such as the water clones of the Crystal Gems.
Lapis’s hydrokinesis will be nerfed by her augment, so she won’t quite be able to throw an entire body of water at someone like it’s no big deal. However, she’ll still retain that ability to a lesser degree, This probably won’t be too noticeable to her since she won’t be around large bodies of water often. She will, however, retain her ability to form water wings.
